Involving an MP?
« on: October 24, 2017, 06:23:24 PM »
I've seen a few references to contacting an MP in order to smooth out / accelerate things. In what circumstances is that appropriate? And how would one do that? Through the MP representing the location you plan to move to? An MP representing family in country?

It would only be appropriate if there were extenuating circumstances (like a serious illness or death that requires you to be there with your spouse) or extremely long processing times. The people who have contacted their MP's have been waiting in excess of 60 business days on priority applications and are being told they are "not straight forward" or similar.  It's not a first course of action while waiting, but the "help line" is useless so if you get to the point you need escalation - contact your British citizen's MP. :)

There was the usual backlog during the summer and some people contacted the MP of their spouse if they had been waiting months, to try to speed things up. As you have only just put your application in, contacting an MP won't put you up the watiing list, if that is what you were hoping?

Did you pay priority to speed your application up?

Your application was only received in Sheffield yesterday, so you shouldn't even be thinking about contacting an MP. It's only something you should do as a last resort if your application has not been processed within 12 weeks and you need to get in contact with Sheffield to find out what's happening with it.

So, if it gets to mid-January 2018 and you still don't have your visa yet, you can look into maybe contacting an MP.

If you paid for priority and you hear nothing by business day 30, then you are able to call the helpline and escalate.   I got my MP involved at day 20 as I needed to travel urgently for business.

I wouldn't bother ringing the helpline, save the money, arrange a face to face meeting with the MP and go down that avenue.
