Ok, what is it about Leeds?
« on: November 10, 2017, 04:44:14 PM »
Have heard several comments in TV commercials, shows, etc., about someone being from or going to Leeds. It has the tinge of an "in" joke to it that I'm not in on.

Most recent is the "Pride and Breadjudice" series from Warburton's Bread. Which is kinda amusing. But the chosen bridegroom is "from Leeds".... meaning, um, what? Is that bad, funny, good, obscure...what?

My lived in Bolton (my youngest was born there) where Warburton's was founded and my husband's entire family is from the area so I was forwarded this advert from them. I saw it and had a good laugh and my daughter thanks her lucky stars she didn't grow up with that Peter Kay accent! In this case, the reference to Leeds is that the lad isn't the guy from Bolton who was not suitable in the woman's father's eyes so he seemed a better prospect. At the end of it, it's supposed to be a parody of Pride and Prejudice, right? So, that's why the empire is built in Bolton.

What other things have referenced Leeds? I'm curious now. I know that my family from Lancashire do have a little "prejudice" about people from Yorkshire so...

In think in the case of the Warburton's advert, it's about rivalry between people from Lancashire (Warburton's was founded in Bolton, Lancashire) and people from Yorkshire (and Leeds is in Yorkshire). One of the comments on the advert on YouTube states that 'no one from Lancashire would marry someone from Yorkshire'.

Not sure about other references or jokes about Leeds though.
