Weak knees
« on: December 06, 2004, 11:27:57 AM »
Somewhere around week 20 of my pregnancy my legs started getting really tired and me knees were always feeling weak.  The general tiredness has gone but 12 weeks post birth my knees are still really weak, squatting down and getting back up again is quite a struggle at times. Just wondering if anyone else has experienced this.  Maybe it's age related?

Oh no Liz!  I know you've just had a birthday, but don't blame everything on your age!  ;)

Seriously, your joints do soften up during pregnancy and that's normal.    It takes 40 weeks for that baby to fully develop.  Don't underestimate the amount of change that your body's been through.  You need time to bounce back and to get back to normal.  Some things take longer than others, and it varies person to person.

I'm sure that your joints will get back to normal soon.   I was 32 with my first, 35 with my second. and I did feel it a lot more the second time around.

But if you're concerned, have a chat with your health visitor or GP.

It took an entire year for my body to feel like mine again after I had Aillidh.  I have had 4 surgeries on my knees, including a ligament graft, and like you, my joints were week for about 6 months afterwards.  Once I went back to weights and Pilates, however, my leg muscles built up again and the weakness either went away on its own or the muscle development made me not notice it a/more.

Like Kellie, I was 32 when I had my first child.

I could not believe how weak I was when I resumed exercise at about 6 weeks pp!  I could feel the strain on my joints, and I had no stamina.  It wasn't until about 15-16 months pp, and I really had to work at it, that I started feeling like my own body was coming back.

You know,  the whole 'year to recover' and the joints softening and stretching are true.  Also, when it comes to knees (and any joints for that matter) they are supported by muscle--any loss of muscle or extra weight causes strain on them.

Age definitely has something to do with it!  (I was 32)    :P physically, it's all downhill after 30

Thanks for all your replies, I do feel somewhat reassured now.   It just never occurred to me my knees might be affected like this, all the books and magazines only talk about the wieght gain and PND, no-one tells you about the rest of it. Also, I guess I have been lucky up to this point in my life, having had very few health or physical problems. I'm going to try and sets some ME time aside to do some proper exericse form now on, and hopefully that will help get back to normal.

Thanks again
