First Spouse Visa - permanent address vs correspondence address?
« on: February 16, 2018, 01:27:32 PM »
Hello All!

The online forms asks for my partner's permanent home address (he is a UK citizen) and his correspondence address (if it's different). For his permanent home address, I was going to put where is currently living which is a rented room in a shared house. BUT, I am having a family friend write a letter for accommodation. So would that family friend's address be the correspondence address?

And so for Part 2 in Appendix 2 ...

2.1 Where do you and your sponsor plan to live in the UK?
- this is the address of the family friend, correct? The one that is writing the letter of accommodation for us, not his rental situation?
2.2 Does your sponsor own this property? If no, on what basis does your sponsor occupy this property.
- My sponsor/partner doesn't currently occupy the property, so not sure how to answer the second part.
2.3 Does your sponsor live in a council owned property?
- No
2.4 Is your sponsor in receipt of Housing Benefit?
- No
2.5 How many bedrooms are there in the property?
- four (4)
2.6 How many other rooms are there in the property?
- two (2), six (6) rooms altogether
2.7 Does anyone, other than sponsor, live in the property?
- Yes. Family friend and her partner. The form asks for their relationship to partner (family friend) and passport numbers. Can I leave the part about passport numbers blank? It's a weird question to ask.
2.8 Do you intend to work in the UK?
- Yes, I will look for work after my Visa is granted.

... do those answers seem right?

Where do you actually intend to stay when you arrive?
You shouldn't be having the family friend write a letter etc. unless that's where you are planning to live, even if it's just for a short while until you find somewhere else.

I may be staying with that family friend. As soon as this visa is approved my partner will begin looking for a place for the two of us. So that may be figured out before I arrive, it may not. But this family friend is a trustworthy, upstanding British citizen with a lovely home. Who is willing to help us out any way she can.

The accommodation situation with us is a little tricky. The place where my partner is staying *might* allow me to stay there but the landlords are SUPER DUPER SHADY people and I really don't want the fate of this visa to come down to them. My partner has lived with this family friend before, I think it's even the address on his driver's license. So the plan is to have the family friend provide the accommodation requirements for us for this visa. And stay with her for only a short time if needed when it is approved.

Does that make sense? It's a major issue that we are fretting about right now.

Yes, I understand.
I think it would be safer if you both just committed to staying with your friend when you first arrive, even if it's just for a few days.
There's a couple of reasons for this, firstly, when you arrive at the border, you may well be asked if anything has changed from when you applied and you will want to be able to answer 'no' honestly.
Secondly, if you actually have a firm plan, it will be much easier to answer the questions on the form!  :)

Once you are in country, you'll be free to move where you want and you'll just notify UKVI of your change of address.

Thank you! So should I put my partner's current address in for his "permanent home address" and the family friend's address for his "correspondence address"? And for questions 2.2 on Appendix 2... "Does your sponsor own this property? If no, on what basis does your sponsor occupy this property." I'm not sure how to answer that since he doesn't own it and doesn't currently occupy it either.

- My sponsor/partner doesn't currently occupy the property, so not sure how to answer the second part.  Say something like, this is the home of a family friend who will be accommodating us when my wife arrives, until we make other arrangements.
2.3 Does your sponsor live in a council owned property?
- No
2.4 Is your sponsor in receipt of Housing Benefit?

It's a weird question to ask.  Not having the passport numbers won't make a difference to the outcome but I would ask them anyway, they might not mind.
2.8 Do you intend to work in the UK?
- Yes, I will look for work after my Visa is granted. That's fine.

And remember, you can always explain the living situation in the sponsor letter.
That where he lives is not suitable for you to move in to so you have made the arrangement with the family friend until you find your own place.

Perfect, thank you!! I forgot about the letter thing, so it's good we can clarify things in there if needed.

Absolutely! You will also worry less while you're waiting, knowing that you have had a chance to explain anything that doesn't quite fit neatly with the way the questions are asked on the form.
