« on: March 07, 2018, 01:52:18 PM »
Hi all! I am USA citizen, from NYC, now in UK, West Yorkshire. Glad I found this forum and already got help from members. Thank you so much! Still there are a lot of questions since I have never being in UK expect London.  :)  Last years have being living in EU (Finland) and it's another planet  ;)

No doubt Finland is another planet!  I remember how the last time I went to the states and I was surprised that strangers would just walk up to you and say any nutty thing that entered their heads, like life is a giant cocktail party.  Contrast that with Finland where nobody ever says one more word than strictly required.
I did like how everyone greeted you with an enthusiastic "Hey!", just like in NC.

Tell us the story of how you ended up in Finland?  Speak Finnish?  Have any reindeer?

HA HA HA!!!  Whenever I go back to the USA now, I'm all like, "Why are you talking to me?!?"  Ugh, these Brits are rubbing off on me!

Yes, in Finnland it's not good to talk to anybody, even during meetings in companies. USA expats were going crazy to handle these issues :)
Here I feel I am back to people from mouses' rarely-populated country. :)

Initially for summer vacation, then applied for MBA program. No Finnish. No reindeer

Oh, I'm one of those!  ;D  Luckily we're in one of those parts of the country where people don't look at you as if you've got two heads just for striking up a conversation over the cat food section in the supermarket.

That's surprising that you manage to get by without speaking Finnish.  I remember a lot of people speaking English but not everyone.  It's a unique skill, to guess what's going on all the time without actually understanding what the hell people are saying.

There must be a significant other in the picture somewhere.  Let me guess....his name is Perti?

(For the rest of you guys, the joke is that every guy in Finland is named Perti)

It's no matter on which language to be mute  :)
So no problem in Finland without Finnish language.

No way. :) Finns are so shy. There is a joke - What is the difference between Finn introvert and extrovert? When meeting neighbor introvert will look at his own boots, extrovert at neighbor's
