Left teaching... now what? CV advice!
« on: March 25, 2018, 03:07:39 PM »
A bit of background. I taught in the US for about 6 years. In 2015, I moved to the UK with my husband and when able to work legally (Jan 2016), I found a teaching job. My first school was dreadful, but I stuck it out for almost two full school years. Then, I moved schools to see if it was any better. Some things were, however, I was working even more hours and was even more stressed/anxious/depressed. I am currently on sick leave due to stress and have handed my notice in.

I am putting together my CV, but am struggling. It seems the best choice is to make it more skills-based for a career change, but I still want to make sure it looks the best it can.

So my first question is: Has anyone left teaching and been successful with finding another job/career here in the UK?

Second question: Does anyone have an example of a skills-based CV that I would be able to see?

Thanks!

There are a lot of people who have found success outside teaching, so many that they have a hard time retaining teachers in the UK for the problems you've cited in your own experience. One of my friends has been far happier managing a dominoes than he was teaching.

Do you know which industry or type of jobs you're trying to move into?

I was put on gardening leave at Feb half term. I've been teaching since 2011. It just wasn't sustainable anymore. I am a shadow of my former self (because of teaching and infertility).

Still figuring out my next move. Considering a few things in the civil service but also looking to maybe to some bookkeeping courses. I was a Physics teacher... I've also signed up to run kids' parties that have a Science theme.

This scares me. I’ve been teaching for 21 years and am able to retire here, but I’m hoping to get a non teaching job. I’d take a teaching job to get started!
Are there any good CV example sites to search on?

Are you open to a different kind of teaching, like tutoring? There are loads of tutoring websites where you can just sign up and find people in your area who want to be tutored. It would keep you going until you can figure out what you want to do.

Or, there's always English language teaching. This is what I do. It's many orders of magnitude less stressful than teaching in a school, and although the pay is pretty grim, it's usually enjoyable and pretty rewarding.

Something to think about :)
