US rental leases
« on: May 27, 2018, 05:36:35 AM »
Hi

I'm not sure who to ask so apologies for posting here but was hoping someone can advise me on renting in the US.

With a 12 monthly renewable lease renting an apartment are you able to give notice to leave mid-term like you can in the UK or is it down to the small print ?

Thanks in advance x

Down to the small print.  There is likely a fee to break the lease early or in some cases you are liable for the full amount.

Unless it specifically states you can leave in the middle of the lease with so much notice... You're on the hook for the whole lease.

At least that's been my experience. I got lucky as my last rental did a 6 month lease and I had to leave anyway. Had a bad car accident and needed to move back in with my folks.
The usual. American girl meets British guy. They fall into like, then into love. Then there was the big decision. The American traveled across the pond to join the Brit. And life was never the same again.

Yep, whatever was stated in the contract you signed. If nothing is stated, it would boot over to State law - which is probably different in all 50 states!

Yup.  Also negotiate with your company to pay any fees associated with ending a lease early (what my company did).
