Preventive Care
« on: June 05, 2018, 12:59:46 PM »
In the US, our family GP sent us reminders for any upcoming preventive care and I could log online to see any future schedules. Such as vaccinations & monthly/annual health checks for my son (it was monthly when he was a baby), and things like paps, mammograms, etc for me. How does it work here in the UK? Does the GP practice also keep up with this or do I have to somehow figure it out myself?

They will send you letters but it's probably a good idea to keep track also.
Nothing will seem like it's often enough compared to what you are used to though.

They *should* send letters.  They do in England.

Pap smears are every 3 years.

Vaccines (I think your son is 2ish?) will be when he is 3 years and 4 months - you will want to ask for a red book!!!!  (GP should be able to direct you on how to get one)

Mammograms aren't until MUCH later here.  I can't remember the exact age.  55ish?

Yeah, they've already been after me for colon cancer screenings, smears, and mammograms. I think I got the first notices within six months of arriving. I have to say, NHS Scotland certainly is on top of things!

Ditto for myself and my wife in Yorkshire. We just got the letter for our 2nd colon cancer screening this week as it is every other year for folks over 60. (We arrived back in May 2016 ). We also got heart health screening by invitation within the first few months we were back.

Don’t hesitate to be proactive if you feel the need. Some years ago my wife was diagnosed as having osteopenia so she called her older sister in Edinburgh and suggested she go to her GL and ask for a Dexa scan which she did and she also had the same diagnosis.
