I am trying to use Turbo tax for tax prep, as much as I want to hire someone we just can't take the hit of 3k for accountant plus tax liabilities.
In TurboTax it's saying a refund, but I believe that is wrong. It was first saying owed but I had to take out self employment tax which I believe I am exempt from due to totalization agreements between US and UK. When I took that out, it said refund.
I made maybe a lil over 40k last year, 20k was before moving to UK (lived in US Jan 1st through May 03, 2017) and 40k or so self employed in UK (May 3rd through Dec 2017). So I've put my total yearly income and deductions but It seems like Turbo tax is only considering the 20k earned while living in US which I think is right. I applied the foreign earned income exemption for the self employed income which was earned after I moved. But because I was out of the UK too long I have to wait to file. And it seems like I have to determine how much I earned while I was back in US visiting as I worked during those weeks and I guess that is not considered foreign earned income anymore.
However Turbotax said to do standardized deductions bc I guess its higher than my itemized. It asked if my spouse is doing itemized or standard, as he is not a US citizen and I am filing as married filing separate not sure what to answer there. I opted for standard deduction but I think now maybe that's what is throwing things off...Can I do standard deductions if only lived partial tax year in US?
Can I even do itemized if those deductions only are items that applied to me after I moved and I am doing foreign earned income exemption on the income after I moved?
