We stopped in Boots today. Ran into Sucralose, Soy, and Aspartame. (I can do Soy, but would rather not if I can avoid it.)  Wasn't much at Waitrose, either. Still looking. Chocolate is going to be the flavor.  ;)

Do you have a Holland and Barrett or planet organic near you? Unfortunately between the sugar tax and catering to diabetics most readily available products will probably be full of fake sweetener :(

Yeah, I'm finding aspartame and sucralose in almost everything.  [Yuck!] There's a HB, and I'm also going to check Vitacost and online....

That f-ing sugar tax.  *glares at Jamie Oliver*  I'm glad Coke is about the only processed thing I consume anymore.

I guess teaching people to make a deliberate choice to NOT EAT SO MUCH is kind of not on the official agenda?   >:(

Obesity is much more complicated than that. Saying it's as easy as that, just like the sugar tax will do sweet f*all., I'm afraid.

It's really complex, and it's often an overlooked medication side effect! My mother gained about 50lbs from one med and can't get it off, and doesn't want to try anything else because it was the only one that managed her migraines.

I am happy that more research is going into obesity, and they're taking action to reduce sugar consumption, but they're really going about it so wrong. In supermarkets it seems like there are more cake aisles than real food!

I definitely agree that in some cases obesity  is complicated. I was on high doses of steroids several years ago and blimped up badly. It took quite a long time to get off them and back to a "normal" weight. My comment is in relation to the general public, not people with medical, psychological, or mobility issues.

Without their being a metabolic/medical/mobility reason involved,  I am comfortable saying that my belief is that the  majority of overweight people are overweight for one reason - they take in more calories than they burn. They're either eating too much or moving too little, or a combination of both. Their "fat" (sorry to have to use an unpopular term), like the wad I'm carrying around my middle presently, is a lifestyle issue. And, as with most lifestyle issues, it's a matter of choice. Lack of education may be at play, but the bottom line is that if you take in more calories than you burn, unless you have a truly exceptional metabolism, you blimp up.

So, I would be way more supportive of a serious educational outreach regarding nutrition and weight, and the potential future health impacts of being obese, than I am of the "sugar tax."
