Sadly, it wasn't always this difficult.  The UK government has been actively trying to reduce immigration, and the current rules are in place to do exactly that - make it harder for immigrants to afford to come over, harder to meet the financial requirements, etc.  And one of the hardest hit groups are those families living abroad and wanting to return together.  :(

It’s MUCH easier to get a green card.  :)

Another thing to consider is if he should get US citizenship before you move to the UK.  Something to think about.

Just an FYI—my UKC friend has applied for US citizenship in July. He’s been informed that it is approximately a 22 month backlog.

When you are legally working in the UK, then your income may be included towards meeting the financial requirements of Appendix FM and Appendix FM-SE.

Nope I'm just a broke millennial with student loans lol. I wish. We purposefully haven't bought property to save money for moving to England. We'd have to hit the lottery to get that kind of savings. I'm just sad. This will break his heart. My husband loves his family and will stay in the US as long as he needs to but he misses the UK and his family. More than likely he will start the job search to work at higher pay for a year. And then we will revisit it.

Or I could start a gofundme but I doubt we would get 60,000 lol

Hey, I'm a broke millennial too! Just jumping in here. In regard to your student loans, make sure that you check with your student loan provider before you move for a couple reasons.

Not sure how much you owe, not my business, BUT if it isn't an amount you can pay off immediately call your student loan provider. I did that a year before I moved and found out that they ONLY accept payments from US banks/credit unions. Therefore, I had to prepare ahead of time and ensure that I can transfer my money each month back to my US account to pay off my loans. I ended up leaving about $700 in my US account, and while I am without a job in the UK, I can still pay the minimum payments through my online banking in the US without having to transfer. Once that $700 is empty and I (hopefully) have a job in the UK, I will be able to up the amount on my payments.

It's a huge mess. I know this has nothing to do with your main post, but since you mentioned student loans I wanted to check in and let you know. Your student loan provider might have no issue with you paying through a UK bank, but I would certainly double check before you move. Everyone's situation is different.

Best of luck to you!
