UK citizen returning - Need to get BRP, etc?
« on: August 22, 2018, 06:27:53 PM »
My husband is a UK citizen living in the US for 25 years on a permanent residence/green card.

We are moving to the UK in a couple years. I have researched all the stuff I need to do for the move but then I got thinking.... what about him?

He has his British passport but does he need to get a BRP like a US citizen does? Would he already have a still valid National Insurance Number from when he lived there as a kid or would he need to get a new one?

I tried looking through the pages on gov.uk  but it was confusing. haha

He just needs to arrive with his British passport, nothing else is required. His national insurance number will be the same.

@larrabee , that would be the same reversed, correct? If I get ILR in a few years and then me and my husband decide to move to the US (for whatever reason, this is a hypothetical question) My US passport/SS # would all be the same and I can just mosey my way back into US life?

Yes, it would. But you should definitely get UK citizenship before you (hypothetically) return because ILR expires after 2 years out of the UK and visits back don't re-set it.  :)

Once you are dual, you can come and go in either country, as you please.

I don't see us returning to the US...we both prefer the UK. However, you never know! Thanks for the info :) I want that red passport. (Or are they going to be blue now...?)

It's the smart thing to do!  :)

They will be rolling the blue ones back out at some point.

Thank you Larrabee for the info. I was hoping that would be the case but the more I researched, the more I got myself into a worry-spiral. haha

The reason I started researching was, while we will be moving over there sometime in the next couple years, we are visiting next July. I thought that he could go ahead and apply for his provisional driving license (use his aunt and uncles address) so that he'll have that at least when we do move over. He does have a US drivers license but I thought the earlier he could start to establish identification & "residence" over there before we officially move, the better. Plus it gives him a head start on the process to take his tests.

I got worried because the gov.uk site says: (under the "Apply First Provisional Driving License")
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Before you start

It costs £34 to apply online. You can pay by MasterCard, Visa, Electron, Maestro or Delta debit or credit card.

You’ll need to provide:

an identity document unless you have a valid UK biometric passport
addresses where you’ve lived over the last 3 years
your National Insurance number if you know it

You’ll get a confirmation email from DVLA after you’ve applied.

Your licence should arrive within one week if you apply online.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So i got thinking "Man, does he have to get a biometrics?" (But I guess if he has a UK Password he doesn't).

Sorry, I know this isn't Visa/Citizenship related completely but... kind of. haha

I believe from October 2019, if I recall correctly.

Not only would your SS number be the same, you will be using it each year you are living in the UK to file your US tax returns. Your SS record is also linked to your SS number. Note that each time you renew your US Passport you get a new number, and while living in the UK you should renew it every 10 years as you need it to travel to the USA, and if it is more than 5 years expired it is harder to renew.

After 25 years working in the USA your husband will probably have a substantial SS to draw when he reaches full retirement age even as a non US citizen living in the U.K. That also is linked to his SS number which is his forever. If he hasn’t done so already I would create a SS account online where he can see his record online, and also access it once back in the UK.

Our son thought about applying for his provisional licence before he arrived back but one question on the application asks you to state that are resident in the UK

He applied very soon after he arrived, and the fact that he had to put down his Texas address as a previous address was absolutely no problem. Note that you can drive for up to a year on your US licence when you return, and rental car companies accept a US drivers licence as well, which is what we had to do when we returned a couple of years ago.
