What would you do?
« on: September 12, 2018, 06:01:05 PM »
Hey guys. So today is wd 60 and still not heard anything from sheffield. At this point I have a decision to make, I could fly over and stay with my wife for 10 days next week as I can work remotely plus September is a quiet time for me work wise, or I could stick it out and wait and see. Problem is I won’t be able to go over in October if the visa is delayed further as I have jury summons (typical!) then Nov work ramps up big time for me! So interested to know what my fellow Anglo-American couples think

Go and visit.  Seems to bring decision emails in my experience.  You may end up flying back together!

I'll pretend I didn't see that you'll be working remotely.  ;)

It depends how you are for money. If it's not tight then there is no reason not to go for it (although you would need to see if the remote working idea is legal, it definitely is not for a visitor to the UK, I don't know how the US looks at it)
If money is an issue at all, I would leave it, you've got the rest of your lives to be together!  :)

I know it's probably not incredibly helpful, but it depends on your circumstances.

If you're paying for your flight to the US, would it cause financial pressure?  For most expats, it takes a while to get a job in the UK because they do not have any UK work experience.  Are you in a situation where you could comfortably survive on one salary for a while, or would you want to keep as much money aside as possible?

Would you prefer to use the money for something else? (e.g. going on a mini holiday break after she arrives, the cost of her flight to the UK when the visa is approved, being able to ship a few extra things to the UK, driving lessons, etc)

Is her intended travel date still a few months in the future (so even if the visa is approved tomorrow, it probably wouldn't be valid for a while and you would otherwise be separated for a long time), or are you at the point where once the visa is approved, she's going to move immediately?

(and just as an FYI, like the UK, any kind of work is not permitted in the US while as a visitor; I know someone who got into trouble for that)

Thanks for the replies! I’m the chief accountant of my company and we actually have three companies very close to where my wife is from and I (for work) sometimes go over for consultancy based work for our sister companies, I just declare it as visa waiver business as I go in so not normally a problem as I am paid by the British subsidiary. But tbh the level of work I’m really talking about here is answering a few emails and being on call to the UK firm in case anything is needed. But unlikely.
It won’t really cause much financial pressure to be honest as I’m ok financially. Her intended travel date was set as 25th August (optimistic in hindsight) so she would generally be coming over within a week of receiving the visa.
That thought did cross my mind tbh that should it come in that time we could potentially travel back together

If finances aren't an issue, then I say go for it.  If the visa comes through while you're there, you can fly back together, which would be a bonus.  :)

That would be a really good bonus! Ok thanks for your thoughts guys. I’ll give it until Friday (flights are still relatively cheap for flying next wed) just in case we get the decision made Email then i’ll Prob just book it then.
