New biometric enrolment
« on: September 23, 2018, 10:20:39 AM »
hello and as ever thanks to all for this helpful forum! I'm writing with a question about applying for citizenship. I've just gotten a new BRP upon receiving ILR, and I've just applied for citizenship (via marriage). When I submitted the application, the online system gave me a notice letter instructing me to go to the Post Office to enrol my biometric information. Am I correct that I don't need to do so because I just did so for ILR, or do I have to do it again for citizenship? Apologies in advance for my confusion - this process makes me question my judgment and sanity! [post edited after I reread letter]

Yep, you need to do it again.  Also make sure to double check that the Post Office location you're going to offers the biometrics service, as not all of them do.

Yes, you have to enrol biometrics for every application.  Part of the reason is to be able to confirm you have been the same person submitting all your applications over the years, and someone isn't trying to use your identity.

Okay thanks, that makes sense, I was thinking of biometrics for the BRP and not for proving identity. Many thanks!

You’ve had to give biometrics for visa applications made outside the U.K. for at least a decade, but those visas have only been issued as a BRP since 2015.

So, when biometrics was introduced, it was actually primarily for identity and for updated information on you rather than for a BRP.

In fact, fiancé visas, standard visitor visas and any other visas valid 6 months or less are still not issued as BRPs, but biometrics must still be given.
