Got Provisional ... What happens if 12mo deadline...

Hi all.

So my wife and I both got our provisional license. Check. We have been taking driving lessons and studying for the Theory test. Check and Check. We don't have our own car at present.

We have a few months before our 12 month deadline but what exactly happens when and if we have not passed all the tests before this 12 month deadline? Do we have to pass all tests or can we just do theory then practical after the 12 months?

Please keep it simple if possible... we have read a couple of things online and it is just not clear to us.

You can only legally drive on your US licences for 12 months, so in order to keep driving as you have, you must have your full U.K. licences before the 12 months are up... so that means you must have passed ALL the tests.

If you do not have full U.K. licences by the end of the 12 months, you will be treated as if you are new learner drivers in the UK.

This means that you must:
- display red L plates on the car at all times
- be accompanied in the car at all times by someone over 21 who has held a full UK licence for at least 3 years
- previously you also could not drive on motorways either, but as they are adding (have added?) motorway driving to the practical test, this may not be the case anymore
