I think it's pretty normal to feel like that - maybe just don't listen to that little voice that is saying it? I get it when I'm feeling down & I don't have a single good reason to feel like that - so it helps to put my rational head on and say it's just not so.

The other thing - I don't change to fit what other people want, eff that. I moved here when I was 40 years old (fully formed adult) & I'm a lot older than that now. So when I see people talk about how they *try* not to talk like Americans or act like Americans or whatever, I admit that thought makes my soul die a little inside & think oh he££ to the no on that, for me. I am who I am. I mean inevitably some things will change the longer you are here - words, inflections, etc, you might do some stuff differently, it happens naturally, but no I don't *try* to change anything of the person I am (my voice or whatever), unless it's be a better person which has nothing to do with nationality. People seem to like me here more for just being myself & as soon as I open my mouth, you can be sure that people remember me - I sound like a hick. Hahahaha! But you know what, when I ring up a tradesman or repairman or whatever for a second time, they know exactly who I am & respond in a friendly way.

So just be you - I'm sure you're great just as you are!

Oh & I live in Yorkshire - people here are friendly. Well to be honest, I've found friendly people all through the UK. Just give it time & things have a way of improving as you go along.  :)

I am who I am too. I just wish I didn't take people's attitudes to heart. Normally I don't care. I think it's a combination of things.

I'm a nice person by nature. I just seem to struggle making real friends. Had a ton of work friends at my last job. Thought they cared about me as a person. Then not a single one came to our wedding. Perspective.

I felt better today so we'll see how next week goes.

That's me!  I can't imagine trying to change my accent on purpose in some fake way.  The result 17 years later is that I sound like I just got off the boat.  SOmething has changed though, when I go home everyone says "you aren't from around here".

And everyone remembers me.  I'll go into a corner store once every three months and get remembered.

I think it can be really hard as well online to tell tone and attitudes. There are brits who think their sarcasm and jokes come across clear as day when, in actuality, it reads as rude or mean through text alone.

According to my family I have an accent now. I fight them every time and say no but I know it’s true.  I do try to switch my language depending who I’m talking to. Sometimes I’m successful other times.. LOL

But I think because I’m from the Midwest mad have such a soft voice anyways my accent is easily impressionable ( as if my accent is it’s own person)

Jimbo and I should have a Hick Off one day! Hahaha.

Whenever I've tried to imitate a British accent, my husband just creases himself laughing. I say but what does it sounds like? He says, like nothing on this earth. 😂

I hope KristieP2018 and everyone else has a great week this week ahead.

I think some people are just more susceptible to it than others. Haven't been able to work out and rhyme or reason behind it yet but I do find it very fascinating.

I too switch up my language depending on who I'm talking to (but I do occasionally forget and jumble them LOL). My brain seems to just automatically do it now.

ahahah oddly enough, my brain seemed to read it the way you intended and it wasn't until just now when you pointed it out that I noticed it said "mad"

I don't often say bloody out loud as it just feels wrong to me LOL When I do use it, it's usually when I'm not thinking too much about what I'm about to say and it just falls out of my mouth and catches even me by surprise
