Are you so sure yours is a specified company?
You said you dont own any shares and owning shares by you or your enumerated family  members is actually the very definition of the specified company.
Just saying since your initial post doesnt make it clear.
"A family business" that doesnt belong to anyone in YOUR family is just a job.

Hi Olga, sorry for the delay in replying. We have been busy collating all our information!

After much deliberation and confirmation from the very helpful people on this board we are now apply through route A instead =)

As before, I don't hold any shares in the company and ultimately the company is solely owned by my step-brother (so not even direct brother).

Hope this clarifies somewhat!

Just to add; do you think it is worth writing a sentence in my sponsor letter with words to the effect that the company is owned solely by my step-brother?

This is what I have so far regarding this portion:

"I will be using my annual salary of £XXXXX to meet the financial requirement under category A. I am employed by XXX as a commercial director since May 2017. Included as supporting documentation are my relevant payslips, bank statements, P60 and letters from the company confirming my status in the company as a non-stakeholder and ongoing employment."
