I just tell people I'm originally from Georgia, but I lived in Los Angeles for 8 years. Everyone seems impressed when I mention LA, but honestly I'm just hoping people don't mistake me for a wide-eyed country bumpkin who just recently left her safe little hometown for the first time. Then again, maybe most people in the UK wouldn't think of someone from the deep south as a country bumpkin. Who knows!
Funny thing though, when I'm here in the UK, people seem to pick up straight away that I'm from America. Except for the repair guy that came by to switch out our storage heater last week - he seemed confused and told me I had a "right funny accent".
But while my husband and I are in the US together, Walmart employees mistake me for British. Yes, Walmart. Nowhere else. I guess because they hear my husband speak and then they hear me minus a southern drawl, they just assume I'm British as well.
