Nearly every person who asks me where I'm from says the 'I didn't want to offend you in case you're Canadian' thing, in some variation. Are Canadians that tetchy? Sheesh.

I don't even think they are. The people that I've had say it to me were always in a work environment and they were always the ones that came across like the type of person who would find being mistaken for an American as an embarrassing thing because of how the country is viewed abroad at the moment (because of the President, etc.). They would be the type to view calling somebody American as an insult and/or be the type that makes a half-assed apology after saying something like "oh you're just so American!" in a patronising way.

That's just been my experience though and I imagine that will vary with other's experiences.
My, how time flies....

because nobody here knows anything about Arkansas. (And why should they! I don't want to know anything about Arkansas. LOL)

Not all of us Brits know nothing about Arkansas - my aunt has been living in Little Rock for the last 40 years... I fly out to visit every year or two, so I've spent about 8 months in Arkansas in total :).

I had an interesting conversation with an American couple a few years ago, when I was working in retail in Bristol. They came up to my counter and their accents sounded really familiar, so I asked where they were from. The husband was all deadpan and said 'Bristol'... I responded with, 'no, seriously... your accent is familiar. I have relatives in Arkansas'. Turns out they were from Little Rock, and the husband did contract work for the hospital where my aunt works :P.

I completely hold my hands up and say that I probably know less about Arkansas than you do! LOL

I just tell people I'm originally from Georgia, but I lived in Los Angeles for 8 years. Everyone seems impressed when I mention LA, but honestly I'm just hoping people don't mistake me for a wide-eyed country bumpkin who just recently left her safe little hometown for the first time. Then again, maybe most people in the UK wouldn't think of someone from the deep south as a country bumpkin. Who knows!

Funny thing though, when I'm here in the UK, people seem to pick up straight away that I'm from America. Except for the repair guy that came by to switch out our storage heater last week - he seemed confused and told me I had a "right funny accent".
But while my husband and I are in the US together, Walmart employees mistake me for British. Yes, Walmart. Nowhere else. I guess because they hear my husband speak and then they hear me minus a southern drawl, they just assume I'm British as well.  :P
