Car insurance that discounts for US driving history?
« on: October 29, 2018, 04:04:35 PM »
Just passed my license exam and am looking at picking up a cheap 5 door for shuttling the kids around town.

Trying to figure out which insurers will take my 20 years of accident free US driving experience into account when quoting instead of quoting someone who's never drove before and just got a  license this year. Also trying to figure out how to enter it into their system.

Call around.  If you've had an extended gap between moving here and getting your license, it will be more difficult.

Admiral took my driving history.  I've heard Aviva and Geico do as well.  But what one customer service representative says may be different to the next.  ::)

Yes, you'll definitely do better calling rather than trying to use comparison websites for that.

Make sure you can get your claims history from your US insurer. That is needed for the discounts from Aviva and I'd assume are needed for others. Good luck!

Thanks.
I did an online quote with Admiral and they provided a phone number to call for out-of-UK driving experience. I don't have a gap in my history as we got our licenses pretty much exactly a year after we moved.

Did Admiral just need the written statement from your US insurer stating you didn't have any accidents for ___ period of time? And you just had to send it into Admiral or something?

This worked for my son last year. The Aviva website has the specific wording required plus they need a copy of your US certificate of insurance.  Our son still had his expired certificate which he scanned in, and he called his US insurer, GEICO, and told them what wording he needed in their statement of his driving history with them. They mailed him a PDF which he uploaded along with his certificate onto the Aviva website.
