Social Security number application

Hello,

We have just been to the US consulate in Edinburgh to do the notification of birth abroad/first passport for our third child. We live in Newcastle so Edinburgh way more convenient.

The previous two times we have taken the SS-5 form with us and they have sent us the SS number by post (seperate to the passport)

This time they told us they no longer did this at the Edinburgh office but had no idea how we would do it-suggested we maybe contact London and ask them.

We are due to go to the states for a 2 month trip next week and so wondered about going to an office with the form and his birth certificate and passport while we are there. Has anyone done this? Will the fact we arent ordinarily resident in the US be a problem??

This is all I can find, sorry!  Hopefully someone more knowledgeable will come along. "If you do not wish your application to be processed by mail through the Federal Benefits Unit in London, you should delay your SSN application until you are in the U.S. or a country that has a Federal Benefits Unit, and you can make your application in person at a local Social Security office or Federal Benefits Unit."
