viking museum Oslo
« on: January 11, 2019, 09:27:50 PM »
Ok, so the Daughter (and I, really) would like to go see the viking ships and museums up in Oslo.  We are not comfortable with traveling after Brexit hits, as we're concerned we'd have problems getting back home again (into the UK) as the Daughter's "direct family member of an EU citizen" card will be worthless if it's a hard Brexit, and may catch her some static even in a soft one. Once we had our pre-settlement cards I'd feel a little better. But until then, we are thinking of trying to make a hop up there in early March to see the museums, while the UK is still EU.

Has anyone ever been there? Can you recommend a hotel/airline/etc, etc?  I don't know much about Norway other than it's supposed to be expensive. We'd be traveling light, and are fine with having meals bought out of a grocery store.  Trip maybe 4 days? One to travel up, one or two to explore, one to travel home.

I will preface my post by saying Dave and I went as part of a package holiday.

Norway is a fantastic place and I would definitely recommend going.  There is a heck of a lot to see and do in Oslo alone.

We stayed at Scandic Byporten which is very centrally located and next to the train station, if memory serves.  It sounds like you might want to stay a bit closer to Bygdøy Peninsula, though, which is where a number of Oslo's famous museums are (Viking Ship, Kon-Tiki, Norse Folk Museum, etc).

If museums are your main interest, I would definitely look into getting an Oslo pass. It's a flat fee and allows entry to many museums as well as free use of public transport, including the ferry to Bygdøy Peninsula (however I believe this isn't running in March and you'll need to take the #30 bus instead).

We flew with Norwegian, and I have nothing bad to say about them, really.

Coolies, thanks!

May I ask what package holiday you used?

I'm good with a city center hotel and taking the bus. There's a lot to see looking out of the windows of buses, and the train from the airport goes into city center, I believe?

They were great but its only a couple of days here and there. Did go up to Voss and Bergen though on the train which was amazing.

Ooh! Sorry I missed your reply - I kept checking back but never saw it!

Yes, we went with Riviera Travel.  It wasn't cheap, but they managed to pack a lot into our 7 days - a couple days in Oslo, a couple in Voss, and a few in Bergen with a number of stunning train, boat, and coach journeys in between.  The price was justified, to me, because Norway has always been one of my dream places to visit and I didn't want to do a disservice by trying to organise everything myself.  Riviera were really great, and our guide was exceptional.

Another thing I'd recommend in Oslo is the opera house.  If you like looking around the places you visit, especially at the architecture, then I think you'd like it (maybe not a good idea if you're afraid of heights, though!).  The building is meant to look like an iceberg and is constructed in such a way that you can walk up onto the roof from street level to get a great view of the city.  I really enjoyed it.

I just Googled the building, and it looks amazing!  I like the use of wood and curves inside to soften it.  But the exterior really does resemble an iceberg.
