Separating families is an immoral act.

I think we can all agree that UKVI does not have a moral compass though.  There are literally thousands of families around the globe separated due to the "rules".  Though UKVI will happily ignore the rules if the media gets involved.  So I suspect this guy will be able to stay.

They should have an escalation process. In this rare case I somewhat agree with Sirius, if they don't meet the requirements, on appeal he's allowed to stay without free use of the NHS (aside from emergency care like everyone else).  They own property, likely have retirement savings, and their family is here. They have a support network and wouldn't be "draining resources". The rules exist, they shouldn't be broken, but genuine mistakes happen and at this point it wouldn't be right to send them back to the states.

They are always banging on about "draining resources". Amazon/the City got a pipe as big as the channel tunnel sucking a stream out to some off-shore vault. Taxes paid? £1.67. Wages paid requiring government to step in.

Eff me if we don't choke on a grain of sand and swallow a bowling ball.
I just hope that more people will ignore the fatalism of the argument that we are beyond repair. We are not beyond repair. We are never beyond repair. - AOC

Listen to me. This Government....

We are witnessing a sh*t show like nothing since before WWII. An absolute abdication of responsibility.

But they manage, while they f*ck up every single thing they get their hands on, to chase down some 90 year old codger.

Daily Mail leads with a Megan article.

Free emergency care in A&E is very little, the sort of thing that would cost about £60 - £90 in another EU country, the £90 being if they had an x-ray too. Expensive emergency care is billed as soon as they are admiited, ward/operation/aftercare etc. My sister had a bill for thousands when she visited and that was for a stay on a ward for a couple of weeks and tests. No 50% added to the bill as she had insurance that paid. Somebody on another forum said the NHS bill for his father's stroke was 36k.

Daily Mail should not even be considered news, it's entirely entertainment at this point. But the lines between news and entertainment seem to have been blurred beyond recognition in the last decade. :(

I'm very nervous about the next few months. I have friends in France right now, documenting the riots even though that wasn't part of their vacation plans and BA truly lost all of their luggage (including fancy camera lenses). I could see violence like that erupting here if the wrong decisions are made and they push the costs onto the people.

That is what Brussels are worried about: the "yellow vests" are already in Belgium and the Netherlands now too and will likely spread throughout the EU. Far right and far left parties coming together to protest against the EU and the leaders of their own country that bring in tax rises.

History shows that if you push people too far, they they will rise up.  It will be interesting to see if there are yellow vests protests in EU countries where they now have populist anti-EU parties in government.

Considering that most people's wages have stayed the same for the last ten years, it wouldn't be that hard to drum up a yellow jacket protest here.

Does anyone know if the protests  in France have taken on a nationalist / xenophobic / blame the immigrants tone?  I'd be very concerned that it would quickly devolve to that type of thing here.

BTW, Congrats to Nigel Farage for quitting UKIP rather being in the same party as Tommy National Front.

Our climate is changing rapidly due to man's carbon creation. This is the meta.

The resource wars began a while back and this French movement is a small skirmish.

We can choose to do this peacefully, or we can kill each other.

Ordinarily I would say you are over reacting with the kill each other thing, but then I learned that there's one section of the government that is taking climate change seriously and planning for it.  That's the military, and they'll be planning ahead for the killing part.

My thoughts are that, yes, they broke the rules. BUT, they're older. My parents are in their 70s and don't live in the internet the way people of my generation do. I think they would have been able to put visas together for themselves if necessary, but it wouldn't have been easy (not that it is generally).

While I agree that they should have known about the rules, I feel like we get jaded because "we followed the rules." But the rules are immoral, imho, to the point it's inhumane and legal extortion. Many old people are facing financial hardship, so to expect him to pay circa $3000 for a visa plus flights is a joke and a half.

The rules are only to placate xenophobes and cut down on statistics. Not anything moral.

Someone in another group suggested that he pay for his own care and not use the NHS, but it's likely he paid into it. I have two great-aunts over 100, so I guess it is feasible that he could live for a while. But most people don't live much longer after their 90th birthday. It's not like he's the straw that's going to break the NHS' back.

The UK is uniquely placed to provide weapons and technology!
