Travel outside the UK
« on: January 16, 2019, 09:49:41 PM »
We just had news that hubby's mother has had a stroke.  He is going to head to the States when he can get a flight in the next day or so.

He spent two months in the States July/August last year.  His mother had an op.

We are on the first spousal visa and will go for Further Leave in Nov/Dec of this year.  Eventually hubby will go for British citizenship.

Is there a limit to him being out of the UK?  I asked this same question last year when he was over there and was reassured that it was OK.  Will this trip still be within the time limit - if there is one?

I *think* as long as together you still meet the financial requirements and can explain any time apart it should be OK, but I admittedly don't know where that would be in the official guidelines so I hope the experts see this. When applying for citizenship there is a limit for time outside the UK, and you must be in the UK on the date 3 years before you apply.

Also, i hope your husband is OK. Lots of support to him and his mother as she (hopefully) recovers! So sorry he has to head back on such short notice.

No, there is no limit for the visas. There is for citizenship but he'll be well within that. Especially with good reason for travelling, there is nothing to worry about.
Very sorry to hear about MIL's stroke.

Thanks Margo.

Thanks Larrabbee.

Feel much better now.

Thanks Mrs Poetryman for your concern.  Hubby has spoken to her and she is weak but is doing OK.

Big hugs!

For citizenship, it's no more than 270 days out of the country in the previous 3 years prior to the application.  And no more than 90 days of that can be in the previous 12 months.  So even if he was in his qualification period right now (which I doubt he is), he will be just fine.

Keep us posted!
