US/UK taxes
« on: November 15, 2018, 09:31:21 AM »
I have no clue how to do my taxes for US now that I’m in the UK, so any advice will help.
I’m in the UK on a spouse visa. Moved here in late July and started working in mid September.

As you only moved in July you are unlikely to qualify to file your 1040 for 2018 until June 2019 at the earliest. File an extension Form 4868 with the IRS by 15 June 2019 as a start.

Our son moved to the UK in September, 2017 and filed his 2017 US taxes using Turbotax. He started work about 6 weeks after arriving. It was very clear that he would not be able to avoid the ACA mandate or to exclude his salary with FEIE until he had been out of the country for 330 days. However, when he came to file, Turbotax would not do the e-file until he had been out of the country for 365 days. (He had already filed for an extension earlier in the year to extend the deadline to October 15th). Not sure if that is the strict rule or just Turbotax but wasn't really a problem, he only had an extra 35 days to wait for his refund into his US bank.

To answer the OP's question then filing US taxes can probably be achieved using the same software they used when living in the USA. I only know Turbotax but it accepts overseas addresses and knows the rules about living overseas (e.g. auto extension to June 15), and has forms such as FEIE and 1116 to claim foreign tax credits.
Dual USC/UKC living in the UK since May 2016

So do I go on the IRS website and file the form? Can I file my taxes with turbo tax?
