Pittsburgh(er) Marrying an Edinburgh(er)
« on: February 19, 2019, 03:43:04 PM »
Hi Everyone,
I was introduced to this forum by an American friend that recently married a Brit and moved to the UK. She said this helped her immensely when figuring out visas, work, and all the necessary paperwork needed.
About me. After nearly 4 years of long-distance and plenty of money spent on flights, my partner (who is a dual Irish/UK citizen) and I will tie the knot this July and plan on calling Edinburgh home. I'm on this forum to learn from folks that have gone through this process already, hear from people about balancing their American family and new family, and everything I need to know about visas.
I'm excited to learn and get this process started!
Thank you in advance any and all of those that respond and have already posted about their experience/knowledge!

Hi welcome to the site Edinburgh is such a beautiful city been there to visit a couple of times I live in southeast England so about as far away as possible. I found this site hugely helpful when I first moved to the UK in 2002 and I still like the site now. Take care

Hiya. Welcome.  I'm living in Stirling, not too far from Edinburgh.

I'm originally from Florida but have lived in Connecticut, Ohio and most recently, North Carolina.

Hi!  As your friend (and ours!) MrsMagpie has said, you've found the right place.  If you haven't already, have a look around in the different sections of the forum... at this stage, the most important section for you is likely the Visas and Citizenship forum, where we can help you sort out what you need for your applications over the next five or six years.  When you're getting close to applying, start a thread there with your situation, and we will talk you through.  (I suspect MrsMagpie has already given you a head start, so there shouldn't be too many surprises for your application.)

But don't be a stranger!  We have quite a few "fun" sections, and a lot of "coping with moving to a new culture" sections, as well, that you might not think you need 'til you are confronted with the reality of living here full time.
9/1/2013 - "fiancée" (marriage) visa issued
4/6/2013 - married (certificate issued same-day)
5/6/2013 - FLR(M)#1 in person -- approved!
8/1/2016 - FLR(M)#2 by post -- approved!
8/5/2018 - ILR in person -- approved!
22/11/2018 - Citizenship (online, with NDRS+JCAP) -- approved!
14/12/2018 - I became a British citizen.  :)

Hidy Hidy. Ex Calif here, now in Glasgow.

As your spouse is Irish, you have the option of coming in as the spouse of an EU person, which is hella easier than coming in as an American. You might want to compare the benefits/detriments of both options.  If it's a hard Brexit, of course, that might only be good up to 29 March!  So you'd need to have done everything by then. Not sure even running to the JP next week and then filing for a family permit and activating it by getting here before Brexit could happen. Fingers are crossed it's not a hard Brexit and you have the option of doing all that in the transition period....  ::)

Edinburgh is lovely. You'll enjoy it.

He would have to renounce his British citizenship though...  which I wouldn’t recommend at the moment.
