E File Turbo Tax for Social Security Ded
« on: March 02, 2019, 12:00:08 PM »
I checked this with an IRS Agent, then I e filed, and it was accepted by IRS.
Go to Income Summary, then Less Common Income, then Misc Income,
then Other Reportable Income, in description I put US/UK tax Treaty on Social Security, then I entered minus amount of SS. This will generate a Schedule 1 and put the amounts on 1040 line 5a and 0 in 5b.  You do not need Form 8833. Cheers

Using the free online TurboTax option:

1) OK, when I do this (exactly what it says, above), it subtracts the SS from my pension income. And says I'm due a refund of $1,222.

2)  Did you put it in as SS in the SS income section, and then ALSO go in and use the negative amount?  When I do that, it says I should have a $940 refund. (It's also taxing part of the SS.)

When I do the paper copy forms, following the directions exactly, I get an expected refund of about $207.

Something's not right here. Have you left out a step anywhere, by any chance? :D

Response from TurboTax:

If you live in one of the following countries, your Social Security Benefits are exempt from tax on your Form 1040:

Canada, Egypt, Germany, Ireland, Israel, Italy (if you are also a citizen of Italy), Romania and the United Kingdom. This information is taken from IRS Publication 915   If you meet the qualifications for your Social Security Benefits to not be taxed, report the Social Security exactly as it appears on your SSA-1099.

Overwrite box 5b (the line where the taxable Social Security shows up on the new 1040) to be Zero and write in the line next to it US UK Tax Treaty article XX. You can do overwrite in the Forms section in the Desktop version, but you cannot e-file with an overwrite

Bummer. Back to the paper forms....

After looking over your post, maybe because you are using free version????  Did you minus entire SS amount or the SS tax amount? Procedure I used worked for me. Yes I entered it in the income section, then I used minus (Entire SS Amount) as I first explained in PM.

I minused the entire SS amount in both scenarios. What it did in the one case was subtract it from my pension income, which brought my taxes artificially too low.

In the case where I had put it in as SS income and then gone down to the misc income and entered the exact same amount as a negative number, it had already calculated a taxable portion of the SS and added it to my pension income. So when it then went to subtract the negative social security, it subtracted it from the combined pension/taxable portion. Still not the correct calculation, and an oddly high tax refund amount.

In both cases, the refund numbers did not match what I've gotten several times by doing it on paper. I'm playing it conservatively and sending it in with the manual calculations. If they surprise me with more than my calculated $207, I'll be pleased.

Perhaps it makes a difference as to how much taxable social security we are talking? I know that, depending on your other income, the amount of SS that is taxable changes. Perhaps your amount of SS was such that it was not taxable at all?

I did contact turbo tax and they say you can't do any override adjustments online, and you cannot e-file an overridden entry on the desktop version.

99.99% of professionals include an 8833 because it explains to the IRS you have taken a treaty position.  It is not compulsory; but it can help. Professional tax software does this calculations fine and simply enters zero as the taxable amount. A negative on the other income line is also to my mind acceptable.
