Tick-box or form 8965?
« on: March 10, 2019, 04:47:46 PM »
Hi, all-

I am trying to get my US tax forms done today and am a bit confused about the healthcare exemption on 2018 version forms. I have lived in the UK for more than the full tax year so have been covered by NHS but don't know, in my situation:
-is it enough to just tick the box on the 1040 that says 'Full-year health care coverage or exempt' - OR-
-do I need to fill in form 8965 - OR -
-does indicating I'm UK-based for the full tax year (on 2555EZ) just mean I don't need to report my health care coverage?

Thanks so much,
Kristen

PS. I haven't been on the forum for a while and, while searching on this topic, noticed all the organizing happening re: tax fairness for US citizens abroad. Every year around this time as I sit down to do my taxes, I get FIRED UP about it, and I'm so glad to hear there is some proper action going on! Looking forward to getting involved and taking up the cause.

PPS. From now on, when I need a good laugh, I'll think of 1040 Schedule 6...

Sorry...nevermind! I have found the bit in the 8965 instructions that explains what foreign residents do. Got there in the end!

I know it's been said before, but this 'improvement' really has increased the required forms to a silly extent.

Best wishes to all during the tax deadline crunch season! xx

The good news is that the penalty for not having health insurance has been eliminated beginning this year (so next tax season this won't be a concern).
