If you're adding a 5cm deep layer to the top of your pot seventeen thousand cm3 per pot doesn't sound right, ...way too high.

I think that bag will have more than you need.

She's going by the numbers the online calculator gave. But something is way off.

Yeah, I had used diameter instead of radius.

So it comes up as 4021.2385965949 centimeters3. And with several pots, I should use up most of that 20,300c3 in the bag.

Just also transplanted our Nosferatu pepper plants. They are nowhere near as dark (supposedly almost black) as advertised. Will be interesting to see if more sun turns them darker.  https://www.victoriananursery.co.uk/Chilli_Pepper_Seed_Nosferatu/

The reason it isn’t right is because the calculator is using the diameter of the pot, not the radius.

It should be:

Pi x radius of pot squared x depth of pot
Which is:

Pi x (16.5 x 16.5) x 5 = 4,276.5 cm cubed

So for 3 pots, that’s 12,829 cm cubed.... so one bag is more than enough.

The vendor finally answered. I'm getting about 20 litres of gravel. Well, that'll hold me for the next decade or so! Yoiks!

(It's still cheaper than buying it in small bags, or trying to heft it all home on public transporation -which I'd have real trouble with- or paying for a cab. Feel kinda sorry for the delivery guy, though, on the stairs!)

20 litres is only about 5 US gallons, or 19,000cm³.

As ksand24 calculated, you need about 13,000cm³ for three plant pots.  You will have leftover gravel, but I think this is a reasonable size of bag.
