Trying to catch up on state taxes
« on: April 12, 2019, 01:20:23 PM »
Hey guys.
So I moved to the UK in 2015. I have been submitting my Federal taxes every year, but have had no idea about state or local so I did a bad thing and just ignored them. (To be fair, I called the Pennsylvania State department to ask them how to file my taxes for PA, and the woman I spoke said she had NO idea what I should do and actually told me to just ignore it if I was not intending to return home.) I have been meaning to sort it all out anyway, but OMG there is so much that you have to deal with as an expat here anyway that I have just ignored it cause we weren't planning on going back. But now, we are thinking about it and I want to make sure I have everything sorted. Does anyone know any services that can help me? I've seen a company on Facebook called Expat Tax Online, but I wanted to research them before I gave them any information about myself. Has anyone used them? Or heard of another trustworthy company? I would really appreciate your help.

Thanks

Are you here permanently? If so, from reading the PA brocure on residency, you don't owe PA taxes unless you have income from within the state as you are not domiciled there. (Pensions don't count, as Federal law prohibits a state taxing a pension of someone who does not live in that state.)

That sounds very similar to Louisiana. One of my US pensions is a non-qualified pension reported on a W2 so I do have to pay State taxes on that income. I have reduced the withholding as low as I can but I still need to file a State return each year to get about $300 refunded.
Dual USC/UKC living in the UK since May 2016
