Limited company vs "Umbrella" company?

Hi:

Just checking to see if any independent contractors or freelancers out there have any insights on either setting up a limited company, or signing up with an 'umbrella' company to work and get paid?

I have a job offer from a big company to come on board and work as a freelancer on a short term contract, but expect me to either have my own limited company, or, get set up through some umbrella company to be paid/pay taxes etc etc....

This is all new to me because I have always managed to simply invoice clients, and get paid directly.

If that specific thread doesn't suit, look around or even post there.  They can provide very specific advice.

The only piece of advice I am qualified to give is to NOT listen to any UK only advisors when they tell you that what you do here does not impact your US situation.  Get good advice from someone who understands the US side of things.

Be aware that if you become self employed, it will very much complicate your next visa application, unless your partner earns enough from employment to meet the requirements, (or you are using savings) in which case you can use their income instead.
