Joint Bank Accounts...
« on: May 23, 2019, 06:37:18 PM »
Did anyone who opened up a joint account with their partner have their credit history affected?

My British partner has a 999 credit history, however as I have just joined the country and do not have any credit history, I would be worried that his score will be affected? I'm assuming having no credit is the same as bad credit?

Thanks.

Simply opening a bank account won’t help or hurt your credit, so I wouldn’t worry about it too much from that aspect.

Do be aware that if the aggregate total of your non-US assets totals $10,000 at any point in the year (even if it's only for a day), you will be subject to FBAR reporting, and that includes reporting any accounts you hold jointly with your partner.  Be sure your partner is aware of this and they are fine with you reporting the account to the US government.
