Study Restriction and MOOCs
« on: June 27, 2019, 04:06:08 PM »
This might be a question no one can answer, but I thought I would try just in case. I am on a fiance visas, currently waiting for my biometrics appointment for FLR (M). I know I cannot work, volunteer, or study until FLR is granted. However, I was wondering if anyone knows if I am allowed to do MOOCs (open online free courses anyone can take) such as Coursera or EdX just to keep my mind busy in the mean time?

Personally, I wouldn't risk it.  It's unlikely to be "caught out" but best to just not go there.

That is what I figured. I just thought I asked. I get not being able to enroll in a British University; it just seems weird that you can't take a free online course on jewelry making. Thank you for your advice!

I think the issue is that you would be carrying out the act of studying while in the UK on a visa that doesn't allow you to study.

Same with working - you cannot do anything that consists of work-like activities, even if it's unpaid volunteer work or remote online work, because you will be doing those work activities while in the UK on a visa that does not allow it.

I get it. I would not do anything to risk violating my visa. Trust me. This is my second UK visa so I follow the rules well with them. I have now seen two different people ignoring that rule completely and enrolled in an UK University while on their fiance visa because a lawyer told them it was fine (despite the fact it is clearly on the government page that you cannot). That is such a huge risk on bad advice.

I was just curious about a non university/college open art online class since its literally its just watching some videos to learn a new hobby. But since you guys think its not good idea, I won't. I'll buy a book and teach myself rather than risk anything  ;)

Trust me, we don't think it's logical or unreasonable, we just wouldn't do it.

It's also crazy that people can't volunteer to help in a homeless shelter serving warm meals while on a fiance visa.  But nothing about the immigration rules makes sense (well, few do).   ;)

Have you already married and applied for FLR(M)?  If so, hopefully it'll be quick.

I get the volunteering rule as I have had job offers come from most every volunteer work I have done in the United States, so I can see them being afraid volunteer work would lead to a job offer before you have the right to it...but at the same time, it seems crazy not to be able to at least give selflessly to others in my free time. I felt awful having to turn down an offer to participate in a beach clean up. i had to explain how it could violate my visa and I was just stared at like they thought I was trying to make up an excuse not to participate.

I have applied for FLR this week and uploaded all my documents! Unfortunately I could not find a biometrics appointment any sooner than two weeks away within 150 miles of me :(  I went with a 60 pound appointment on July 12th that is about a 40 minute train from me. The only earlier appointment was July 11th for another 100 pounds and a two hour train ride to Manchester. I decided it wasn't worth one more day wait.
