Pursuing citizenship - biometrics for old ILR?
« on: July 08, 2019, 09:13:39 AM »
I was assisting USC friend yesterday who is going for UK Citizenship. Her ILR is the old school 'wet stamp' type in her old passport, issued in 2001. So she was never required to get BRP. Obviously the citizenship will require biometrics. What happens when she answers 'no' to question 6.1 on form AN? ("Have you been issued with a BRP with a previous application for leave?"). Will they come back to her with details on how to submit biometrics?

It just seems silly to have her get a BRP for citizenship when she's just going to have to cut it up and return it.

Thanks!

Not sure what you mean, exactly.

There’s no requirement for her to have a BRP for a citizenship application. Giving biometrics just means giving your fingerprints and photo to confirm your identity for the application - it does not necessarily mean you get a BRP.

If you already have a BRP, you send it with the application, if you don’t, you just send your passport with the ILR sticker in it instead.

Everyone has to give biometrics for citizenship now, whether they have a BRP or not. It’s just to confirm your identity for the citizenship application and in this case has nothing to do with getting a BRP.

So, if she doesn’t have a BRP, then she doesn’t have a BRP. She ticks the box to say she doesn’t have one, and continues on with the citizenship application, providing her passport with the ILR sticker in it.

When she applies, she will be told where to go to give biometrics for the application, but she will not be issued with a BRP.

As Ksand has said, biometrics and BRPs are not mutually exclusive. Yes, you do give biometrics for your BRP card, but your biometrics are also required for your applications in general (not JUST for your BRP card)
