Waiting lists for practical test
« on: January 13, 2005, 10:38:55 AM »
I know that in my area, it's 4 weeks from the time you sign up,, but in some parts of the UK, it's as long as 3 to 4 months.  :o

Your driving instuctor will not usually recommend to even sign up for the test, until THEY think you are able to pass it.  With this in mind, it might be a good idea to check your area to see what the waiting times are for taking the practical.  :)

the lists tend to get VERY long in summer, when all the youngsters are out of school.

Have a look at http://www.dsa.gov.uk/atozdtcinfo.asp?cat=38 to find the wait times centre by centre ... I know I've seen a full ist of all the centres, wait times, pass rates .... I'll add it if I can find it again!

P.S. For Northern Ireland - http://www.doeni.gov.uk/dvta/press.htm
For Irish Republic - said to be over a year ....

Great link Graham,, I think alot of the long waits are more to do with the increasing demand for test times and days, and it's not just the summer kiddies that make the waits so long. I wonder if it's also just a shortage of examiners?

Here in NI, the waiting list was 3-4 months.  It is my understanding that it was due to a lengthy strike by civil servants which was just resolved mid to late last year.

My two local centres were 15 & 17 weeks, so I booked at another centre a little further away. It was still 8 weeks. I booked my test before I ever called around for instructors. If he hadn't felt I was ready at the time my test came up he would have swapped appointment times with another student, so no big loss.  As it was I was more than ready.  Of course now the waiting time at my local centres are 11 weeks and 1 week!

The difference in waiting times is amazing.  There are five I could go to and the wait times range from 1 week to 8 weeks!  Guess which one I'll be going to?   ;D
