I just hope that more people will ignore the fatalism of the argument that we are beyond repair. We are not beyond repair. We are never beyond repair. - AOC

Yeah, we've been watching that on the Weather Channel on the Roku.  It's a Cat 5 and has pretty much stalled over Bahamas.  For those not familiar, a Category Five hurricane has sustained winds on the order of an EF4 tornado  https://www.tornadofacts.net/tornado-scale.html. The longer it sits, the more it's like an atmospheric buzz saw, chewing up what's under it.  With a several meter storm surge and torrential rain.

Please say a prayer for the people it its path?

Thankfully, the UK already has naval vessels positioned to land when it is safe, with supplies and aid.

It’s actually stalled over The Bahamas, not Bermuda, Nan D!  Terribly distressing  videos coming out of the islands most affected, Abaco and Grand Bahama. I lived in The Bahamas for many years but do not know many people on those two islands. But I have friends with family there. It is just awful!

I checked the coded weather forecast for the Bahamas at work earlier.

The forecast wind today was Northwesterly 50 KT gusting 100 KT (57 mph gusting 115 mph), becoming Variable 80 KT gusting 200 KT (92 mph gusting 230 mph)!

Normally, you would only use 'Variable' in a wind forecast when the winds are so light that they're constantly changing direction (so you would have something like Variable 3-5 mph).

That's correct - I tend to get the two mixed up, although they are very different places. I've corrected that now, thanks! They are evacuating the coast in the Carolinas now, with contra-flow on the freeways going inland.

Yeah, "variable" doesn't seem really appropriate on this one, does it?  :)

And so, being me, I have to wonder. This is going to go up the East Coast of the USA. Then it'll get steered across the North Atlantic. How long until the remnants get to us here in the UK, I wonder? (Trying to plan some travel.)

Poor Canada is dealing with the remnants now, and apparently NI and Scotland will be visited by the High Winds and Torrential Rains Fairy bringing anything left over from it on Tuesday.

Is Alabama safe now? President Trump is still going on about it.
