FLR(m) renewal or ILR?
« on: December 29, 2019, 01:51:51 PM »
I appreciate all of the assistance that I've already received in this forum, and with 2020 approaching, I am starting to think about my next visa application. I arrived with my husband (a UK citizen) to live in the UK in July 2015. My initial FLR(M) visa was approved on 13 January 2018, and it is good until June 2020. My question is this: which visa do I need to apply for next, and when is the appropriate time to do it?

Thanks in advance...

The next visa will be ILR. You can apply any time between 28 days before the 5th anniversary of your entry on the spouse visa, up until your current BRP expires.

Make sure to get your life in the UK test done sooner rather than later so you're not scrambling at the last moment.

What date does your current BRP expire? If you arrived in the U.K. on 15th July 2015, then you cannot apply for ILR until 17th June 2020 at the earliest. So your current visa needs to be valid until at least 17th June.

Ah, thanks - I misread the arrival date above.

Okay, so Heidi1961, you entered the UK on July 8th 2015 and your current visa expires on June 30th 2020.

The earliest you can apply for ILR is 28 days before July 8th 2020, which is June 10th 2020.

So, you have a window from June 10th to June 30th 2020 in which to submit your online application for ILR.

What is my visa status during the time when I am waiting to go from FLR to ILR? And what happens if I don't receive a response before 30 June 2020? Or are the response times relatively quick for FLR to ILR requests?

I did just take a sample test and only missed four questions, but I will look further into getting the test out of the way. I hate scrambling.

Providing you make a valid, in time application before your BRP expires, your current status will be maintained under section 3c during the processing time.

It's best to read the book then take tests until you are consistently doing well. Read up again on any areas which are problematic. Try different test websites too, some are better than others.

I'd recommend making note cards. The guide book has a lot of stuff in boxes and it makes you think that is the most important stuff to know, but they will test you on anything in there. And there are over 200 names to know just in the cultural bit. So I made subject note cards and put the names, dates, and brief description to keep going over them. I knew I wouldn't remember everything about all of them, but I hoped I would be able to remember associations. They won't ask you for exact dates though. If a date is involved, they will give it.
The biggest thing I noticed about the test is that the wording is often a little confusing and vague...more so than the practice questions. You get a ton of time though, so don't panic. You can always skip questions and come back. My test was mostly history based but the gov questions I did have were pretty obscure. One I only knew cause I thought it was really weird in the book and just kept reading it over and over. Haha. Good luck with it!

I have three colleagues who also need to take this exam (although, only one is tied to a deadline), so I have some study buddies to keep me company along the way. Fortunately, I have always been obsessed with British history, although I will need to study the specific government/civics section.

The Life in the UK book was the only thing that cured my insomnia during my second pregnancy.  LOL.   ;D
