Hello from Glasgow (success!)
« on: May 04, 2017, 07:35:28 PM »
Hi all. I've been a long time lurker but never created an account until today. I found the forum while working on my fiancee visa application; the now-husband and I were super stressed by the whole process. It was - thankfully - successful, and we're now married and I'm living with him in Glasgow. Since we're done with the quick trip back to the US for a wedding reception, I'm starting the process to convert to a spousal visa.

Anyway, thanks to all of you who've provided advice on everything. It's been super useful! I'm looking forward to being able to add in my experience.  ;D Plus since I can't work yet, I need some sort of social outlet!

Hi brenzie! Congratulations on the visa success and the wedding!  :)

Just to clarify, did you travel to the US before or after getting married in the UK and before applying for FLR?

I arrived in the UK on my fiancee visa. Then we got married. Then (a week later) we went to the US - still on the fiancee visa as I couldn't send my passport in to convert to a spousal visa and still get to the US on time. They didn't give me any grief about it.

What I'm afraid of is that once you were married, you were no longer a fiance so you would not be able to enter the country on that visa. Were you stamped in as a visitor?

No, the agent at the desk just looked at the visa and my thumbprint and apparently decided everything was in order. As far as I understood, actually getting married didn't invalidate the visa. It also says on it that it is good for unlimited entries before its expiration date. (I don't know all the correct terms yet, but it's not a visa that allows marriage on a VISIT, it was a settlement visa as a fiancee intending to marry in Britain.)

It's a marriage visa for settlement.

When I came for a visit after my visa denial the guy at the border was insistent that I use the term marriage visa. Haha. Here on the forum we call it a fiance visa.

The usual. American girl meets British guy. They fall into like, then into love. Then there was the big decision. The American traveled across the pond to join the Brit. And life was never the same again.

So he didn't stamp your passport? Did you tell him you were married already?

There's always been some debate as to whether you will be allowed to re-enter on a fiance/marriage visa after you are married, since you no longer meet the requirements to enter as a fiance.

So, because of that (and because people have had issues in the past), we recommend not leaving the UK until you have switched to the FLR(M) spousal visa, in case you have trouble at the border when you come back.

However, it sounds like they were okay with you coming back into the UK even though you were no longer a fiance... so it may just depend on the immigration officer at the desk on the day you enter.

Thank you! I quite like it a lot too, which is good because otherwise my husband would be in trouble.  ;D  He's been really good about taking me around to a lot of places, too, so I can see various parts of the country.

At the risk of necro-ing this thread......

I'M BACK!

I'm sorry I ghosted everyone  :(   I've been through a few really stressful periods and dropping the folks here was an easy way to feel like I had fewer obligations. But now I'm coming up on my second FLR(M) application and figured I'd better start brushing up on things.

So this is kind of a re-introduction post.... haha

Since you last saw me, I have:
  • Continued working at the job I had just got when I left, even though I hate it (can't find anything better)
  • Made about 12 pumpkin pies, because people keep saying "oh I've never had one before!"
  • Bought a house and managed not to get divorced during the decorating and moving period (it was ALMOST as stressful as the visa applications)
  • Lost my mother-in-law and both of my kitties  :\\\'( :\\\'( :\\\'( :\\\'(
  • Not had a real holiday or a honeymoon because I keep spending our time and money going back home. I've said it's not happening in 2020 because I need a vacation!!
  • Been trying for a baby but not had any luck
  • Probably become even snarkier

It's nice to see I still recognize a lot of names here. Glad to be back  ;D

You were pretty much the only good thing about that building! I do not miss the place  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D  We're feeling settled in at the house, just in time to dig out the Christmas decorations.
