God Save the Queen

Just wondering.......


Does anyone still hum (/mouth the words) My Country 'Tis Of Thee every time God Save the Queen is playing?

I can't help it!  It's been almost 20 years!!!   The husband unit doesn't even give me the stink eye anymore........

I never learned the lyrics to My Country 'Tis of Thee, but I do know the first line (obviously), and so that's what comes to mind when I hear the tune (which I hear a lot during F1 season!).  I was given a lyrics sheet for God Save the Queen at my naturalization ceremony, and ... well... those lyrics are rather repetitive and trite*.  I remember seeing the words for My Country 'Tis of Thee when I was at camp around age 10, and there was a lot more going on.

I just looked it up... it is repetitive and trite for the first verse.  But reading a bit lower, God Save the Queen gets interesting.  I particularly like the line "Frustrate their knavish tricks."

I didn’t even know My Country ‘Tis Of Thee existed until I spent the 4th of July in the US a few years ago and it was played at the fireworks display I went to. I was really confused as to why they were playing God Save the Queen on Independence Day

I do that. Definitely. We sang that every day, along with the Star Spangled Banner (where nobody could hit the high note) in elementary school. It kinda stuck.

But generally it's only after I've given up on "My Country Reeks of Trees...." and only because I can't remember the lyrics after "smells like rotten beef carcases." 



The Daughter owes me SOOOO much for the stuff I had to listen to when she was a kid.

As you would imagine, that song doesn't go down well north of the border:
