Working remotely

I will be moving to the UK on a spouse visa later this month. When I put in my notice at work, my (US) boss offered to let me still work for her remotely. I am wondering if that would be okay? I thought I read a thread somewhere on this forum that recommended against working remotely for a US company while living in the UK. I can't remember if that only applied to people visiting the UK on a tourist visa or not. Thank you.

You'll want to seek advice from an accountant on how to do this properly. It can be done, but its not straight forward or easy to set up.

Okay, thank you. A UK accountant or US one? My employer said she would ask her accountant, and my sister-in-law in the UK is also an accountant.

Dual qualified would be best... A US accountant won't know how to keep their company in accordance with UK laws, nor will most UK accountants.

It’s not just an accountant you need, you’ll also need a good employment law lawyer.

The likely option will be to stop being an employee of theirs and be a contractor instead.  Then you will invoice them gross earnings, as you will now be paying tax to the UK.  Then at the end of the tax year, you’ll complete a self-assessment in the UK and your usual US tax filing.

The other option is for then to issue you a fully compliant UK employment contract.
