How to extend filing date to October?
« on: June 03, 2021, 11:37:11 AM »
Hello all, hoping someone can help me...

Finally got in touch with someone who can do my final US taxes and 8854 ..... don’t even want to think about the £655 plus VAT it’s going to cost me  ::) ::)   Emailed them last week and never heard back from them and emailed again and got a response with the price and them suggesting I extend my tax filing to October 15 if I haven’t already done so...

My question is....How do I extend my filing deadline ??? ??? ???

I looked online and it seems the only way to do it online is if I’m going to use that particular site for doing my taxes....which I won’t be using the site.... so how do I extend ????  Can I print a form and send it to IRS asking for extension.???... I left Hawaii December 31, 2019 so have no income for US for 2020..... I did receive stimulus cheques....deposited the first one....the other 2 are sitting on my shelf not deposited ..... technically don’t know if they should have sent them to me or not.....they came to my UK address....

Any help would be much appreciated ...

Basically what I need to file is form 1040 NR I believe and form 8854

Living near Stirling, Scotland so anyone knowing anyone who could do my taxes in this area so I can get a second price would be much appreciated....looked online and the one place I contacted was the only one I could find

£650 + VAT is a good price, which firm did you contact? I would deposit the checks as they expire within a year of issue, you’re a USC at the time of issuance anyhow. Before you go down the 8854 route check with the U.S Embassy, all renouncing appointment had been suspended due to COVID. If you are able to get an appointment this year you’d be a Dual Status individual… So a 1040 up to the date of formally renouncing at the U.S. Embassy and  1040-NR for the remainder of the year. It’s a complex process, ensure you’re compliant with tax obligations for the previous 5 years too. As for an extension you can simply print off and send the form to the IRS… deadline looms! I’d be minded to have the accountant do the entire process. There are many firms that specialise in expat tax. You’ll find them listed on various threads of this forum

Renounced already......went to US/Canada border on January 8, 2020 and did it formally there...they sent off form and received a letter telling me March 17, 2020 they officially received my I407 and I had officially abandoned my status.....received a letter in April Form I-797C Notice of Action informing me they received I407 So their date of me officially abandoning my status is March 17...hence my concern about the stimulus cheques

Have always been tax compliant.....have last 7 years of tax returns done by H&R Block...

The people I contacted are M&S accountancy and taxation Ltd in Dunfermline

So will try and find a printer to print off form and send to IRS ....or will agree to this firm to do my taxes since you seem to think it’s a good price....and see if they can do extension for me

Thanks.....

Any other input from people would be much appreciated

Ah ok, you had abandon your LPR status. I believe, (although someone else may confirm). You need to file the 8854 in the year you abandoned GC. Will remain U.S. Person in the eyes of the IRS until that time. Take a look at:
Tax for expats
Greenback tax
To name a few, they have expertise in these exact circumstances.
Good luck.

The one time I had to file for an extension to Oct 15 I printed off the form and mailed it in, tracked mail through the post office.

I see now that you can free file an extension regardless of income according to the IRS site. E-file sounds good to me, free and confirmation of receipt.
