NHS health surcharge for FLM(R)
« on: February 22, 2020, 04:08:29 PM »
Hi

I vaguely remember that when I first started the FLM(R) application process online, they asked for NHS health surcharge of £1000 on top of the FLM(R) application fee.

Today I paid for the FLM(R) application fee but there wasn't any info about NHS health surcharge. The PDF file included the health surcharge reference number and below that was the standard service amount £1052.20.

I thought the the surcharge will be added on top? If not, I'm guessing I will have to register on this website -https://www.gov.uk/healthcare-immigration-application and pay for the surcharge amount £1000?

Sounds like you have already paid the IHS surcharge, since:
a) you have a reference number for it
and
b) I don't think it is possible to submit and pay for the visa without paying the IHS surcharge first, because the IHS reference number has to be included in the online application

You should have paid:
- £1,000 for the IHS surcharge as part of the online application before you submit it
AND
- £1,033 FLR(M) visa fee at the time of submitting the application form

Uh oh, did I do something wrong?
Looking at my application it said - Family route, immigration surcharge reference number - (manul), total amount £1052.20 GBP.

No, I don't think you did do anything wrong.

I've just realised why it's £1052.20 instead of £1033... it's because it costs £19.20 to register biometrics, and £1033 + £19.20 = £1,052.20. You used to pay the £19.20 separately at the Post Office but now that you give biometrics at a Sopra Steria appointment, they must have added it to the application fee.

I don't think the £1000 for the IHS surcharge should be listed on there, because you should get a separate email receipt for that at the time you pay it.

You can't get an IHS reference number without first paying the surcharge, so you must have paid it at some point?

Can you check your bank statements to see when the money came out?

Or am I reading your post wrong and there's no actual number listed in the IHS reference number section?

If that's the case, and you haven't actually paid it, then I would go to the IHS website (https://www.gov.uk/healthcare-immigration-application/pay), pay it, get a reference number, and then include it somewhere on your documents, maybe in a short cover letter. You can also make sure they have it when you attend your biometrics appointment.

I thought they directed you to pay it during the online application, and gave you a certain amount of time to do it, as you would need to enter the IHS reference number before you could finish the application, but maybe something went wrong.

The instructions on the IHS site say the following:

Quote
Pay the healthcare surcharge
If you’re making an immigration application online you pay the healthcare surcharge as part of the application process. You must complete the payment and return to the online immigration application in less than 30 minutes.

You need to pay it regardless, because your application cannot be processed without it, so if it is the case that somehow you submitted the application without paying it, you just need to go and pay it before you attend your appointment..

I think I might have found out why.
I've included my previous spouse visa home office reference number in the do you have any home office reference numbers?
The heath surcharge reference number is from my previous application.

Will that be a problem?

Ah, okay. You will not have any Home Office reference numbers, because those are only issued if you have an in-country visa refusal or you make an appeal, or you are an asylum seeker/refugee etc.

So, that number should have been left blank, though using your previous application number probably won't be an issue.

Yes, that will be a problem. The previous reference number was only valid for your previous application... because it only covered your healthcare for the length of the spousal visa and not for your FLR(M) visa.

So, for this visa, you need to pay again and get a new IHS reference number, to cover your healthcare for the next 2.5 years.

As I said though, it should be a simple fix. They can't process your visa until you provide them with the new IHS number, so just go and pay the IHS surcharge, get the new number and include it somewhere in your application. As long as they have the new reference number, all will be fine.
