Hi there,
Myself and my fiancee are marrying in the US next month (very stressful moving flights this week), we have a marriage license and everything organised. We read a long time ago here before making plans it's acceptable (even advantageous) to marry in the US even if we intend to live in the UK, but I'm worried about how the conversations with the border staff will play out.
How can I prove we're intending to move to the UK? We don't have any paperwork that proves that because we can't start the process until we're married. I'm planning on taking a recent payslip, proof I have a mortgage but I don't know what else to take. As a UK citizen I'd like to think I'm not under much suspicion.
I'm hoping someone can either suggest additional information/paperwork to take or set my mind at ease a little.

Thanks!

Very normal way of doing things.

Take a letter from your employer stating when they epxect you to be back at work, as well. Then you should be good to go - you've proved you have strong ties to the UK.

The border agent wished my (now) husband luck when he went through to marry me in California (despite the fact we already lived together in the UK).

Hello,

After my very recent trip of going to the States to get married before returning to the UK, I would advise you take confirmation of wedding booking, hotel bookings (that coincide with your return flight), proof of return ticket, employer's letter confirming when you are expected back at work, mortgage statement would help too.

Also, only pack your case with things expected of a traveler going to get married (wedding suit, clothes for where you're staying etc.) I say this because - I know you are not lying but others do - it's a huge red flag if you say you're going to USA for one week for vacation/marriage when your suitcase is filled with work coveralls or CVs/resumes etc. Also - they could check your mobile phone too if they really wanted so remove anything that 'suggests or hints' you'll be staying in USA longer than you say you will (I know but just in case..)

My husband and I got married in the US and he had an ESTA. The border agent simply told him congratulations. He didn't have anything with him to show he was returning except his return ticket for 3 days later.

Thanks everyone, printed off some more paperwork but didn't need it. Told the officer I was here to get married and got asked to go to a side room and had further questions (who am I marrying, what am I doing after, why aren't I marrying in the UK).
Couple of minutes of questions, another few minutes of watching the guy type but no paperwork requested. Kinda bummed out neither of them said congratulations, but nevermind!

Aww, I like it when they say “it’s not too late, we can send you back if you want” or “don’t do it!”  Lol

Glad you are there and hopefully you aren’t stuck there!
