I'm making Candied Chestnuts
« on: December 14, 2020, 05:37:59 PM »

My wife loves Marrons Glaces and gets a box from her family every Christmas.  Unfortunately, they are SUPER expensive so I figure I would make them myself this year:

So far I'm two days in.  I'm making two different batches soaking in the same sugar water.  Batch A is the cooked and peeled chestnuts you can currently buy in the pouches in Tesco.  These are loose ion the sugar water.  Batch B are chestnuts I bought in a net bag in actual nut form.  They were a major PITA to boil and peel and try to keep whole.  They are in a net bag to try to keep them whole.

I'll do some picture when they are finished

Sounds like a lot of fun!  :) I really like the idea of chestnuts so I planted a sweet chestnut tree.  It's not produced anything yet but it's been in a few years now so maybe next year...

Maybe we could trade for some of that dark beer you made.

It’s all done now.  Batch A seemed to never get candied and tastes horrible and chewy. Batch b turned out very nice, and my wife carefully wrapped them in individual packets and put them under the tree.
If anyone actually makes this,? I would skip the step where you add brown sugar as it destroys the chestnut taste
