NIN number
« on: January 05, 2005, 09:28:00 AM »
Helen,

I posted this on another board, but thought you might better be able to answer...

Do I need an NIN number in order to file my UK taxes for 2003/04?

All of my pay in 2003/04 came from my US company (in dollars), so there was never a need (to the best of my knowledge) to get the number before.

Thanks

If you were resident in the UK and performed your services here, then you need to report your income here (even if it is paid from the US. I assume there has not been any US withholding on your income since your move to the UK. If there has, this should stop immendiately as you pare having withholdings in the wrong country). Therefore you need to go (to a contribution agency near your work or home - call them and make an appointment before you go as you want to avoid kewing for hours!!!) and obtain a NINO in order to file your return. Given that you get paid from the US, I suspect Inland Revenue don't even know that you are in the UK!!! and have not set up a self assessment record for you. Have you received anything from them in the mail?

Yes, they have still been withholding Federal, State and Social Security taxes from my paycheck every week.  The original plan was that my company would loan me the money to pay my US taxes, which I would then have to reimburse when I get back the money from my US return.

No, I have received nothing from them in the mail, so they probably do not know about me.

Do you know where I can find a contribution agency in the West Midlands?
