No idea what I’m doing
« on: June 14, 2020, 03:51:46 PM »
Hi folks,

Any help would be appreciated.

As the title reads, I don’t have a clue what I’m doing with my taxes via turbotax.

I feel this isn’t a streamlined process at all and it’s very frustrating.

First time filing and here are my questions so far:
1. does my husband need an ITIN? I’m filling out form W-7 as we speak. I take it I’m supposed to mail it?
2. Is turbotax the best to use? Can I pay someone in the UK or the US to do them?

Thank you!

Could you give us some background. You a USC living in the UK, married to a UKC?

Filing Married Separately? See recent thread on how to deal with spouse with no SSN while filing with TurboTax.

Hi! Thanks for your reply.

I’m an US citizen living in the UK, married to a UK citizen.
I’m trying to file online as married (filing separately). My husband doesn’t have a SSN.
Just read the thread you helpfully posted.

Does this mean I’ll need to mail in the turbotax return and put “non-resident alien” on the lines that ask for my husbands SSN?

Also, is there a section at the end of the TurboTax return form where you can select “submit via mail” rather than internet?

Sorry if these questions seem trivial. I’ve heard horror stories of people having to pay fines because information isn’t correctly supplied so would like to avoid that at all costs (literally)!

Look forward to replies

At the end you select “Print my return for filing” or words to that effect. In the printout  it gives instructions where to send the  return to and what documents you need to include. Don’t forget to sign and date it.

Hi folks, I’m about to mail off my state and federal tax return and have a few questions please if you’re able to help:

1) do I mail my state return to the same address as my federal return?
2) do I need to also provide pay slips from January 2019-December 2019?
3) can I eFile/eSubmit my FBAR? This seems to be an option but just wondering if other people opt to do it this way?

Will be checking back for replies. Thank you!

1) No. The State tax return must be sent to that State’s Tax Office.
2) If you have W2s then they should be included, foreign payslips just keep with your copy of the return in case of an audit.
3) efile the FBAR is the only thing you can do. They no longer accept paper reports. The filing is done on the FINCEN site.

Thanks for your help. I don’t have a W2. Do I need to supply payslips or if I don’t supply payslips would that increase my chances of being audited (which I’m trying to avoid!!)?

For info, I don’t owe any money to the US and they don’t owe me any money back.
Thanks!

No problem, I would include form 4852 which is a substitute W2 for folks that don’t have a W2 for whatever reason. I have to file substitute 1099-R’s every year for my 2 UK pensions so am familiar with form 4852. They are easy to complete and show the IRS that you simply have not omitted  or  forgotten them. I have done this for my UK pensions for 13 years now and never an issue.
