US address... Y or N
« on: July 19, 2020, 02:07:51 PM »
Hi All...

Just wondering what peoples thoughts were and how they handle the issue of having an address back in the states? Do we need to maintain one for yearly tax filing? Or for Social Security? Just a general thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks,

No need to have a US address for either filing taxes or for SS. I do have a US bank account which makes it easier to file and pay taxes but that US bank does have my UK address as my primary residence.

I have filed US taxes several years now using my UK address and TurboTax is set up to accept foreign addresses, in that it doesn't insist on zip codes etc.

I recently applied for Medicaid through the Federal Benefits Unit at the US Embassy and this week received a letter from SSA to my home address in England telling me that my application had been accepted and that my Medicare card will arrive in 2 weeks.  This is only Part A which is free, I don't intend to get any Medicare supplements like parts B and D. It has been a very useful exercise in dealing with the SS through the Embassy FBU. My wife will be applying for her Medicare and SS in January next year.

I would sign up with an online SS account before leaving the USA because it is impossible to do so once you are not resident in the USA.  The same goes for IRS EFTPS if you want to pay quarterly tax estimates electronically, I think you can register with EFTPS from overseas but the registration involves a PIN being mailed out so it is easier to set it up while you have a US address.
