household goods insurance - move
« on: July 28, 2020, 03:46:17 PM »
So, my shipping company (Rainier) says that because some of our stuff is Packed By Owner I cannot get partial coverage on only the stuff that the moving company is going to be packing up - the furniture. I can get catastrophic coverage - if the ship sinks or they dump the container, I get the amount of insurance on the whole thing. Unlikely, but...

The local rep for the company doing the packing here says THEIR insurance would cover only the items in the shipment that we would choose to insure. However, since they are subcontracting to Rainier, we don't get to use their insurance.

Logical question arises, I guess. Can you have two insurance policies from different companies on one shipment of goods? One covering catastrophic only situations and the other only covering individual items within the shipment?  I'm thinking it's not any different from like having two life insurance policies. Or is it?

The answer to the above is "no".  You can do it with life insurance, but not goods insurance. 8)
