Has Anyone Recently Used Schumacher for Shipping?
« on: July 18, 2020, 01:03:38 AM »
I had a search of the forum for their name and read the posts but most were pretty old. Anyone recently use Schumacher to move from US to UK? I got a quote of $1700 for 100 cu ft, which I thought was much better than Upackweship's price of ~$1900 for 80 cu ft.

I have not ruled out sendmybag either but it's per box and after a certain point, Schumacher becomes more cost-effective for the 100 cu ft option than the sendmybag per box option.

Any info is appreciated. :)

Have not used Schumacher, but you might check with Rainier Overseas Movers - they have a "slow boat" method where your goods are crated up and warehoused, and when they have enough crates for a full cargo container the stuff ships out. It can take several months, but it's much cheaper than the usual, I believe. (There may be other companies that offer the same service - I'm pretty sure Robinsons over here in the UK does the same thing.) We used that option coming over here and anything that fit into the crates (about 180 cubic feet of stuff) ships for a given rate, regardless of weight.

Rainier Overseas Movers, Inc.
7003 132nd PL SE, #200, Newcastle, WA 98059

Not to be confused with another Rainier in the USA that has some really bad reviews. Different company.

I used Rainier and I was happy with their service.  Ask around and get some quotes.  My original plan was to come with as little as possible and mail boxes...I figured around a dozen boxes....then the count went up so I contacted moving companies thinking around 25 boxes.....then the box count keep going up.... ::).  200 cubic feet is basically a pile 7 feet high...7 feet long and 4 feet wide.....and like NaN said...with Rainier they don’t charge on weight...it’s volume....once you start packing the boxes really start adding up...

On a side note....was laughing when I was unpacking the other day.....to me cooking is taking something frozen and throwing it in the microwave......I own a Bundt pan....and a gravy boat..... [smiley=laugh4.gif].    But hey....it fit in the container....and whether it goes out half full or filled to the brim.....it’s the same price.

Had brought 2 nine hole cubby shelves that i took apart and flat packed because I had room in the container...glad I did....don’t have room for them in my flat but they are wonderful in my loft for organization.....and all my plastic drawers that I threw in because there was room are wonderful up there also.... ;D

Thank you for this info. I see now Schumacher is not the lowest after all. Seven Seas comes in pretty low at $1500 for their medium container they drop off, which is cool. I'll look into Rainier now too.

Honolulu: you're so right. I have a feeling I am going to get packing boxes and watch them pile up higher than I anticipated. And ya, LOL. That will be me: "if it fits, it ships", to borrow the USPS quote for Priority mail. So funny.  ;D

Just be aware, when they are quoting you the size of the container, that's the exterior size. For example, a 200 cu.ft. container (lift van) actually only holds about 180 cu. ft. of stuff. Our crates were solid plywood, so our stuff arrived in really good shape.

Enjoy bringing more than you thought you would!  ;D

In my apartment in Hawaii I used painters tape and marked an area that was an inch or two shy of 7 feet long and 4 feet wide and stayed within those boundaries and I was fine for my 200 cubic foot crate.

With boxes that don’t have breakable items in them....give them some squishing room at the top so they can condense them and make them fit at the top of the pile....I went crazy buying ziplock bags at Costco when they were on sale....I know you can’t find them here and if you can...very expensive....and the ziplock bags here are junk....,and filled up the tops of boxes with those.....they filled the boxes but could be squished down if need be.

In a 200 cubic foot container...I had 51 items ====one extra large box....1 large box ....10 small boxes......and about 25 medium boxes.....3 large trunk like wrapped items....2 flat packed 9 cubby hole shelves.....1 step ladder....and about 8 plastic drawers....

Cali....check reviews on companies and their testimonials from past clients....sometimes you get what you pay for....with Rainier my charge included all doc and customs fees.....the only thing that’s not covered is if customs pulls your stuff over for a closer examination and you get charged import fees on any items or things out of their control like dock strikes or stuff.......the fee they quoted me was what I paid ....the only extra I paid was the insurance on my stuff of about $150....because I packed myself you can only take the total loss insurance which is $20 for every $1000 in value ..my stuff was on the slow boat option and took 3 months to get from Hawaii to England.....would have had my stuff at the beginning of April if it wasn’t for the Covid...,I was wondering if they were going to charge me storage fees because that was out of their control but they didn’t......my cost was $3300 for shipping and $150 insurance from Hawaii to here......door to door.....

I originally was going to go with another company....can’t remember who.....and they were going to charge over $5000 which at the time considering I was planning on mailing my stuff sounded cheap....had talked to them multiple times on phone.....hadn’t done much price comparison.....when a story came on the tv news about a shipping company and people were waiting months for their stuff to show up and didn’t know where it was and they weren’t the only case.....this wasn’t the company I was going to use but it made me think and I looked up reviews on the company I was going to use and some of the reviews were really bad....and a lot of them were that they suck you in with a cheap price but then when your stuff arrives at its destination....they asking for more money to cover fees...and at that point they have your stuff so you basically need to pay them more to get it.....

So, just look up reviews on companies.....Sometimes cheapest isn’t best.....Rainier was great and other people used them with no problems......your companies may be great also....just do some research....

Honolulu and Nan: thank you for this info. Great points. I will research a bit more, read reviews and keep in mind the interior sizes. :)
