Two law firms I contacted also said the same thing.

The person who answered the phone at Home Office said that he was not specifically trained to provide guidance and that I should consult the website. But his unofficial answer was that the five years had to be continous.

So I have to apply for FLR (M).

I'm sorry. But at least you know now. Don't forget to get your life in the UK test out of the way for when it is time to apply for ILR, you can sit it at any time.
