Filling income tax question
« on: January 14, 2021, 10:40:28 PM »
Hello, I really need some help here, I haven’t filled a tax return since 2015 it’s is the last year I worked in the USA and moved to the U.K. to live with my British husband, I have been a house maker and stay home mom up until middle of 2020. For what I read on the irs a few years ago I did not need to file since I didn’t have any income. However now I am seeing that the threshold changed to 5 dollars for the year 2018,2019 and 2020. Do I need to file taxes for the past years now? And how do I do that? I would appreciate any help on this as I am totally clueless thanks

If you had income greater than the filing threshold, most folks would use the official penalty-free IRS Streamlined Foreign Offshore Procedures (SFOP) as the lowest risk and lowest cost way of catching up. https://www.irs.gov/individuals/international-taxpayers/u-s-taxpayers-residing-outside-the-united-states

Thanks for the info! Does anyone recommends any software or website to use while filing taxes for the USA using foreign income?

I and my son use TurboTax, mostly because I’ve used it for decades, but it does handle foreign income and foreign addresses. I don’t know how well it compares with other software.

I used to use turbo tax as well, which version of turbo tax would I be able to use the foreign income part? I am trying to file my taxes now and I cannot input my foreign income anywhere? Thanks

I think they all support foreign income, certainly TurboTax Deluxe does.  I use Premier as I have US investments to manage the taxes on.
